Character (Original Universe)
Name: Rhys
Age: 27
Gender: Male
Canon: Tales from the Borderlands
Canon Point: Right before he makes a very important decision in Episode Four Escape Plan Bravo. The decision being either to Rule or Reject Hyperion?
History: Link.
Personality:
Rhys has a big developing dream and a goal that he wants to achieve. The dream was being not a no name employee and being a somebody as well as being Senior Vice President. The main goal was to some day be able to run a company, Rhys decided to go for the biggest one of them all too, Hyperion. Some people would have murdered and blackmailed their way to the very top of the totem pole. Handsome Jack had done those things but he was also a man that Rhys admired. Although he didn’t agree entirely with everything that Jack did, Rhys went with a different approach. He worked his way from the bottom of the company to where his goal was within his grasp. That meant Rhys started off as Assistant Vice Janitor up to being a programmer. He would get promotion after promotion which is a huge confidence booster. This confidence was within Rhys and he used it to be optimistic about everything he did. Rhys is amazing with technology and is knowledgeable with all kinds of hacking. Since he works for a company that mainly builds robots, messes with cybernetics and makes some cool weaponry. He took every opportunity that he thought would lead him toward his desired goal. The tools and equipment that the company had is useful to him and he took advantage of it. There was a great deal of determination that played along with it too. Rhys doesn’t give up easily and he moves forward even if it comes to making sacrifices. He dislikes heights when he is looking down from a far point up. There’s a break in a path and Sasha leaps over as if it’s nothing. Rhys manages to get across too but the one part of the path still ends up coming loose. He ends up grabbing hold and tries to climb back up. As he is climbing the piece becomes more loose making them fall further down. Sasha tells Rhys to let her go, but Rhys refuses as he is still determined to climb them to safety.
When in the land of Pandora, tough decisions could make or break anyone. For Rhys it was all a matter of adapting to the given situation at the time. If it comes down to getting out of there alive, he’ll think of a plan to get away from the danger. He still has a good thought process while being under pressure. The gang of adventurers end up driving a vehicle away from a Rakk Hive chasing after them as well as dodging Moonshots, essentially missiles, being shot at them by Hyperion. He almost gets cornered by not seeing a missile coming. But, Rhys can scan for where the next next Moonshot is going to land and figure out how to get away from the Rakk Hive. There are many other skills that he can use in any given situation. Rhys can be quite observant when he needs to be. He may not be a detective but with years of problem solving his way out of things. Rhys can come up with a sure sounding plan with exact details. The plan may not go accordingly, but sometimes not having one can get you killed. Rhys makes decisions based on the knowledge he receives. They aren’t easy ones to make but someone had to in the end. Some are good while others can be bad or could lead down the wrong path.
On Pandora people tend to go a little crazy over the thing that they are trying to achieve. They let certain things, such as searching for vaults, go straight to their heads. Yes, treasure searching is one thing but there are other obsessions that can make people’s head swell with ego. Rhys does let it sink into his head when he can blend in with the cool people. The cool people tend to be remembered over the nerds. Rhys can certainly dress the part extremely well, he’s handsome and has great hair. Anyone that really knows Rhys though would see him for who he really is. He’s one of the nerds deep down there’s nothing that he can do to change that. Vaughn is the one to outright speak to him about it, but only because he had been on the receiving side for so long. Rhys and Vaughn both got offered a deal from Vasquez that tested their friendship to the limit. One of them could give up the other in the end and split the money with Vasquez. Rhys didn’t take the offer because their friendship matter to him. Vaughn tells Rhys that he thought about the deal but didn’t because after everything they’ve been through he wouldn’t have taken it. Rhys doesn’t tell Vaughn what his answer had been.
Since Rhys has been up in outer space for a long time, he doesn’t really know Pandoran life. The people of Pandora hate everything and anything Hyperion. Thanks to Handsome Jack’s actions. As Rhys first shows up to Pandora he ends up in a little town full of bandits. Rhys doesn’t know that bandits means trouble or danger, nothing could will come out of it. He talks to them as if they would be willing to help him out. Rhys isn’t aware of the dangers that money and bandits would equal a lot of trouble. He didn’t know that he would have to fight for his life at the first town he came across on Pandora. Fighting wasn’t something he's used to doing. Rhys is good at dodging things and then getting lucky to strike back at his foes. The best of his skills is making other things fight for him. He gets a chance to command one of his company’s Loader Bots against a lot of bandits. Rhys isn’t terrible at close combat as long as he uses the stun baton. There is a scene where he can’t put a bandit into a choke hold and he is not successful at it. He gets lucky at using the stun baton against his enemies. Rhys again uses his observing skills to hit his targets to get them away from him.
Rhys is a good guy at heart even when he tries to be mean. When he’s mean he seems to regret it later showing concern or worry all over his face. In disguise as Vasquez later for a mission, Rhys greeted two soldiers at the loading docks of the Helios space station. When being questioned what he was doing on Pandora, Rhys replied ‘your mother’ to one of them, not knowing that the outcome would be that they didn’t have one. While in disguise as a jerk to begin with he felt bad for saying it. His facial expressions at times give himself away because he doesn’t hide his emotions very well. Rhys will try to change the subject by diverting the questioning towards something else if he doesn’t wanna say what he’s thinking. This happens a lot when the hologram of Handsome Jack pops up to bug Rhys. Rhys is the only one that can see him and he had to be careful to not tell certain people about the hologram. It could cause him his life. He will change the subject as if he meant to talk about it.
He’s slowly shaping up to become a leader although he may not realize this at first. It's only a matter of which path he chooses when that time comes. That time came when the hologram of Handsome Jack gives Rhys a chance to sit in the big seat. If you sat in a chair that gave you power and you could share it, what would you do with it? That choice could lead to be bad or to be good. When faced with the question, Rhys decides to want to fix Pandora, he wants to make it better. He may end up getting that chance to prove that he can make difference and that he’s not a no name employee. It could lead to a big decision in the end and how that goes will be up to him.
Third-Person Sample:
The world of Crystallis was very different from Pandora in many many ways. Rhys was still getting used to most of the good things happening. A shadow could sneak up on him but it wouldn't necessarily be bad. There were bad days, but they weren't extremely bad, just him losing out on money because he still couldn't fight correctly. John, his moogle, had been really helpful in telling him the basic things first. Rhys came up against another monster. His puppet wasn't exactly upright at the beginning but now it seemed more of a steady fighter. It would attack slowly but would hit it's mark a few times. There were a few rounds where it got close but Rhys finally managed to defeat the monster. Rhys knew that he needed more training. He never really was the fighting type. If he could find a computer, he would be better with hacking into it. He could have found other people looking to train too. Rhys wouldn't mind party members. It meant that exploring and fighting would be a lot easier. There was also the matter of walking on foot because he didn't trust getting on one of those big yellow birds.
"We should be getting close to getting back." Rhys only started going back not too long ago. The heat hadn't been bad but he didn't want to stay out in it for much longer.
"You could get back a lot faster on a Chocobo. Next time we're back in the city you should go to the board." John made it a point every time to say to check the board. It was a stated fact that it would be faster on a Chocobo too.
Rhys sheepishly rubbed the back of his head. Maybe he'll give the board a try. He could probably find someone to help him with how to ride one. Chocobos couldn't be all that bad, maybe it would be like riding a horse? He never been horse back riding that wouldn't help. Rhys would need to at least give it a try and hope for the best. The man starts to travel back to the town to return in his favor. There were limited things that he could do since he had been alone. It wasn't really fun and he wished for a bit more company than his moogle. John had been fun to speak too but it would be better to make more friends. If he was going to be living here for a long while, he needed to adapt to this new way.
Mognet Sample:
To whom it may concern:
Is there anyone else familiar with the Engineer or Programmer job? I would like to hear more information on the research used or any tactics. Is there anyone that knows a great deal of technology? Even if it's not from this world. If it is from this world that would be a plus.
These birds, Chocobos, how do you learn how to ride one. I know how to drive a car but when it comes to animal travel. I'm new to it. We don't have any friendly beasts back on my world.
You can reply back here on the board. If you decide to want to meet in person for things, we can too! Put down the date, time and place you would want meet at.
